Duncan and Woodbine (Reception)

Welcome to Duncan and Woodbine. Please follow both of our class Twitter accounts: @MrsHughes2023 @MissWilliamsKSL

Miss Williams (Woodbine), Mrs Hughes (Duncan), Miss Foster and Miss Lee would like to welcome you to our Reception class webpage.

Our aim is to support the well-being of every child to ensure that they can thrive in our learning environment.

The Early Years Foundation Stage Document https://www.gov.uk/government/publications/early-years-foundation-stage-framework--2 outlines the Early Learning Goals that children are expected to achieve by the end of Reception year.  All of our learning activities are planned from the Early Years Foundation Stage Curriculum enabling your child to make progress towards these goals. There is also additional guidance in this document about how to support your child in all areas of their learning during their year in Reception.

If you have any queries or questions about your child and their learning then please don't hesitate to ask. We are here to help and want the best for your child!

Key information
  • We celebrate all children's achievements in class and the progress they have made. We have a special 'Recognition Board' with a different focus for each week. Children's photographs are placed on the board when they achieve the weekly goal. If all children achieve the weekly goal then we earn a special treat.  We also send out 'Proud Clouds' to parents/carers to share any other 'wow' moments with you. We value each and every child's hard work, their kindness to others and reward children for always trying their best.
  • P.E. is every Wednesday. Please make sure your child comes to school dressed in their P.E. kit with either a school cardigan or jumper. Own clothes are not permitted.
  • All children are provided with their own water bottle which is kept in school.
Reading Homework
  • Each week your child will receive a reading book liked to our phonics scheme. This is for your child to read to you. Children should practise reading their book a few times during the week. Reading records should have a signature or a comment from parents/carers so we know you have read with your child. Alongside this, your child will also receive a reading for pleasure book.  This is for you to read to your child.

  • Book bags are sent out on a Thursday/Friday and should be returned on a Wednesday ready to be changed.

  • Reading should be an enjoyable and fun activity for your child. There are some helpful reading tips inside the reading record and each week, we will highlight the letter sounds and words the children have learnt in class. Please practise these letter sounds and words at home.

  • The blank level questions are there for you to use with your child when reading the book. We use these questions in class and they are very useful for helping children to develop their comprehension and language skills.

  • If you have any queries or questions about reading, please speak to a member of the Reception team.
