Art

At Kirkdale St Lawrence,  our Art and Design curriculum inspires creativity, curiosity and self-expression while developing pupils' practical artistic skills and cultural understanding. Through a rich variety of experiences, children explore drawing, painting, sculpture, textiles, printing, digital media and design. Pupils learn about a diverse range of artists, designers and craftspeople from different cultures and periods, enabling them to understand the impact of art on the world around them.

Achievement – Children develop confidence and pride in their artistic abilities by acquiring and refining skills progressively from EYFS to Year 6. They are encouraged to take risks, experiment with materials and techniques, evaluate their work and celebrate their achievements through displays, exhibitions and shared learning experiences.

Nurture – Art provides opportunities for pupils to express themselves creatively, explore emotions and build resilience. A supportive environment encourages all children to value their own ideas and respect the artistic contributions of others, promoting wellbeing and self-confidence.

Culture – Pupils explore a diverse range of artists, designers, architects and craftspeople from different cultures, communities and historical periods. This broadens their understanding of the world, develops cultural appreciation and helps them recognise the contributions that art makes to society.

Hands-on Learning – Art and Design is mostly practical! Children learn through making, experimenting and creating using a wide variety of materials, tools and processes. First-hand experiences, workshops, visits and collaborative projects allow pupils to develop technical skills through active engagement.

Oracy and Reading –  Children discuss, analyse and evaluate artworks using subject-specific vocabulary. They engage with stories, biographies and texts about artists and movements, developing their communication, critical thinking and interpretation skills while explaining their artistic choices and responding to the work of others.

Respect for All – Through studying art from different cultures, backgrounds and perspectives, pupils develop respect, empathy and understanding. They learn to appreciate individuality, celebrate diversity and recognise that creativity can be expressed in many different ways.
