Design & Technology

At Kirkdale St Lawrence we are fashion designers, engineers, bakers, architects, chefs and even more!

Our vision is for every child at Kirkdale St Lawrence to develop a deep love for DT. Design and Technology is not just a subject, but an opening to problem-solving, critical thinking and invention. Through our curriculum, we want to inspire children to aim high and allow their imaginations to soar.

Our approach to Design and Technology is built on our anchor curriculum links.

Hands-on Learning

At Kirkdale St Lawrence, we learn by doing. We jump into practical, hands-on activities that help bring concepts to life. By working with materials, tools, and components, our pupils develop fine motor skills and a concrete understanding of the world around them.

Nurture

Our DT projects provide a safe, supportive space where making mistakes is a vital step in learning. This supportive environment builds confidence and ensures every child feels safe enough to take creative risks.

Achievement

We set high expectations so that every pupil can aim high and succeed. Achievement in Design and Technology is not only the final product, but we also celebrate the perseverance shown while designing and the personal progress each child makes from their individual starting point.

Oracy and Reading

Communication is key to design. Children build oracy skills as they pitch design ideas, collaborate in teams, and evaluate each other's work. Children are encouraged to use technical vocabulary to confidently explain how their mechanisms work.

DT brings reading to life. Pupils encounter different forms of reading, including instructions, recipes and biographies of famous inventors. Reading within DT gives children a real-world purpose.

Culture

Children learn that modern design feeds from the knowledge of historical inventions. Through cooking, children discover ingredients, farming practices, and cooking rituals that bring families and people together.

Respect for All

Our pupils learn respect for all by creating products designed for the needs of different users. We also develop a respect for the environment through sustainable material choices and promote respect for safety and peer feedback.

Whether they are measuring, stitching, assembling, or preparing, our practical curriculum ensures that learning is memorable, interactive, and rewarding.
