KSL History Curriculum

Curriculum Intent

At Kirkdale St Lawrence, our intention is to give pupils a broad and balanced History curriculum which will inspire their curiosity to know more about the past. Pupils will be encouraged to ask perceptive questions, think critically, weigh evidence, and sift arguments to develop perspective and judgement. We intend to provide pupils with the subject knowledge and historical skills needed to become an active member of society and gain a good understanding of our world to aid moving onto their future career choices. The pupils will achieve this through a cross curricular approach using a range of engaging and active learning techniques. The history curriculum at Kirkdale St Lawrence enables pupils to develop transferable knowledge and skills which can be used in other curriculum areas and throughout their further education.

Based on the curriculum maestro topics, we have planned a Whole School Map of Memorable Curriculum Moments to enrich our study of history. We regularly arrange school trips to places of interest connected to the topic being studied and invite experts into school to share their knowledge to help bring the pupils’ learning to life.

Curriculum Implementation

Here at Kirkdale St Lawrence, we have adopted the Cornerstones Curriculum. The foundation of our curriculum is an overarching topic approach covering a wide variety of curriculum subjects throughout different projects. Our curriculum is planned to ensure full coverage of the National Curriculum and EYFS requirements, while continuing to build on knowledge, skills, and subject specific vocabulary, through the revision of previously learnt vocabulary in following lessons.  As a school we are following a two-year rolling cycle (Year 1/2, Year 3/4, and Year 5/6) due to teaching mixed age classes to ensure the best curriculum coverage. Curriculum Maestro ensures progression across the primary curriculum, building on prior learning and developing key skills. Key Stage 1 and 2 have one main project a term with a driver subject of history for term one and three. Early Years Foundation Stage have two main projects per term covering areas of the EYFS curriculum, including Understanding the World and Personal, Social and Emotional Development.

Curriculum Impact

Our curriculum at Kirkdale St Lawrence offers high quality and well-planned lessons which encourage progression. Continuity and progression in the curriculum are built around essential knowledge, understanding and key skills within history. Our curriculum inspires pupils’ curiosity to discover more about the past and pupils learn to think critically, ask perceptive questions, and evaluate evidence. Pupils understand the complexity of people’s lives, the process of change, the diversity of societies and relationships between different groups, as well as their own identity and the challenges of their time. The cross curricular approach to the history curriculum at Kirkdale St Lawrence allows the pupils to gain transferable knowledge and skills which can be used in other curriculum areas and throughout their further education.

Pupils attend historically relevant school trips and learn from visitors to enhance their learning in history and create positive memories. Pupils can discuss their knowledge from history lessons and can describe significant periods, events, and people from the past. Pupils develop enquiry skills to pursue and investigate their own interests within a topic.
