At Kirkdale St Lawrence, music is an important part of our curriculum, giving children opportunities to develop their musical knowledge, creativity and confidence through listening, singing, performing and composing. Our music curriculum is supported by the Charanga scheme, which provides a progressive programme of learning across the school. Through a wide range of musical styles, genres and traditions, children develop their understanding of rhythm, melody, notation, performance and composition, while exploring how music connects to different cultures and communities.

Our curriculum overview for this year and next year outlines the key musical learning and experiences children will encounter in each year group. For example, children may explore a particular musical genre or tradition, developing their understanding of its features, history and cultural significance while building their practical musicianship skills.
