PE & Sports Premium
At Kirkdale St Lawrence Primary School we believe that sport plays an important part as it contributes to the health and well being of our children. Sporting excellence and participation, alongside strong cultural opportunities, go hand in hand with academic standards.
We have used the Sport Funding to purchase the enhanced membership of the Liverpool School Sports Partnership and a personalised school package with Little Sports Coaching, which alongside with our own school actions has enabled us to improve our provision in the following ways:
- To hire qualified sports coaches to work alongside our teachers when teaching PE
- To provide children with access to a variety of games and activities
- To pay for professional development opportunities for teachers and support staff in PE and sport
- To provide cover to release teachers for professional development in PE and sport
- To attend sport competitions and increase pupils’ participation in school games
- To buy quality assured resources for PE and sport
- To provide places for pupils at a lunch time sports club and after school club
- To provide top up swimming sessions for children in Year 6
- To provide places for a sporting residential.
PE Curriculum
A wide range of activities are delivered in school that aim to engage and inspire all of our children. We are also committed to ensure that all children receive at least 2 hours of high quality, well planned PE.
Over the year each child will participate in games, gymnastics and dance lessons. Children in Years 4,5 and 6 each have a ten week block of swimming lessons. The government aim is that all children will leave school in Year 6 being able to swim 25 metres. The children who attend our school breakfast club also have access to a range of sporting activities daily delivered by our support staff and qualified coaches.
The Wider Curriculum
PE and sport has a high profile in our school and permeates many aspects of school life.
In the summer term we hold our annual Sports Days in which we encourage participation of all children and the school council are involved with the planning and delivery of the Sports Day. Medals and trophies are awarded to individual children and house teams across EYFS, Key Stage 1 and 2.
We hold an annual Health and Well Being week and liaise with local agencies and outreach services to provide support and advice to our children and parents. Key Stage 2 children take part in Power Health workshops. Keep fit sessions are also held for parents during our themed weeks.
Other agencies are used to enhance the variety of activities available and we take full advantage when these opportunities become available. For example Everton Football Club have delivered training sessions in school and encouraged our pupils to attend further training outside of school time.
Talented children are signposted to local clubs and events to encourage them to develop their skills.
Beyond the School Day
Our school is keen to provide a variety of extra curricular activities throughout the year which are organised by our teaching staff and sports coaches.
Children have the chance to try many sports including dance, football, yoga, multi-skills, cricket, basketball, lacrosse, dodge ball and rounders.
We try to cater for all our children’s needs and so ask the children what clubs they would like to see included during the year. We also monitor participation and check uptake against gender and free school meals.
We enter a wide range of competitions and events and have had many successes.
Primary school experiences are pivotal to the children’s future perception of physical activity and we believe that children leave our school equipped to enjoy sport for all its health and social benefits. For those who relish the competitive element, they gain the skills, confidence and relevant experience to succeed at their chosen level and discipline.
